Description

This is a cruck barn located on the north-west side of a farmyard, possibly dating back to the 16th century. Originally, it had timber-framed walls, which are now encased in sandstone rubble from at least two different periods, topped with a slate roof. The south wall features a wide entrance with dressings made of punched stone and a segmental head. To the left of the entrance is a shippon doorway with a plain stone surround and a window with plain reveals. To the right, there are two low openings under the eaves, each with chamfered sills and jambs. The north wall includes ventilation slits and a door with plain reveals. Inside, the barn has five cruck trusses with high collars. The blades of the trusses are joined under the apex by a yoke, and each truss has outriders with straight braces extending upwards to the purlins, along with two spurs connecting the blade to a wall post. Some posts are buried in the wall or missing, while others are visible. The visible soffit of the wallplate is mortised to accommodate the studs of the former timber-framed wall.
