Description

SD 63 NE AIGHTON, BAILEY & STONYHURST CHAIGLEY Hall Barns

8/30 Barn on north-west side of farmyard, (formerly listed as Hall Barns, 13.2.67 Stonyhurst under Hurst Green)

GV II*

Cruck barn, possibly C16th. Originally with timber-framed walls, now encased with sandstone rubble of at least 2 different periods and with a slate roof. The south wall has a wide entrance with dressings of punched stone and segmental head. To its left is a shippon doorway with plain stone surround and a window with plain reveals. To the right there are 2 low openings under the eaves with chamfered sills and jambs. The north wall has ventilation slits and a door with plain reveals. Inside there are 5 cruck trusses with high collars and blades joined under the apex by a yoke. Each has outriders with straight braces running upwards to the purlins, and 2 spurs connecting the blade to a wall post. Some of these posts are buried in the wall, or missing, but others are visible. Where the soffit of the wallplate is visible it is mortised to take the studs of the former timber-framed, wall.
