Description

44 Heworth Green is a building dating from around 1835 to 1840, originally constructed as two houses but now serving as a house and flats. It is built of brick with painted stone or stucco decorations and features a slate roof that is hipped on the right side.

The building stands three storeys tall with cellars and has a four-bay facade facing Heworth Green. The windows are glazing bar sashes, with painted rusticated lintels on the ground and second floors. The first-floor windows have architraves with cornices on console brackets and a moulded sill band. The door located in the second bay has four raised and fielded panels and a plain rectangular overlight, framed by an architrave with a cornice on console brackets. At the eaves, there is a plain frieze and a heavily-moulded gutter cornice, with chimneys positioned to the left, right, and near the centre of the ridge.

The left-hand bay of the right-hand return facade, which faces Mill Lane, mirrors the main facade but features blind windows covered by external louvred shutters. To the right, there are two lower bays, also three storeys high, with glazing bar sash windows and painted rusticated lintels. The left-hand bay includes an entrance with pilaster reveals, a moulded round arch with a keystone, and a cornice, containing two recessed doorways. Further to the right is a single-storey one-bay wing that has a window recess with a rusticated lintel and louvred shutters. The interior has not been inspected.
