Description
57 and 59 Monkgate is a pair of houses, now serving as a shop and flats, built around 1835 with some early 20th-century alterations. The buildings are constructed of brick and topped with a slate roof.
The exterior features three storeys and four bays. The upper storey windows are glazing bar sashes, each with brick flat arches and projecting stone sills. The ground floor includes a shopfront that projects forward under a flat roof and wraps around the corner, occupying one bay of the right-hand return wall. Above the shopfront, two brick arches from former window openings can be seen in the front wall. A chimney is located at the right of the ridge.
The right-hand return wall consists of three bays, with the left bay featuring blind window recesses on the upper storeys. The right bay has a similar recess on the ground and second floors. The central bay is distinguished by a tall round-headed stair window that extends through the first and second floors. The interior has not been inspected.
