Description

This is a three-storey house, likely built around 1770, and subsequently altered in the 19th century and mid-20th century. Originally part of a symmetrical pair with number 48, it is now used as a shop and offices. The house is constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a pantiled roof. The upper-floor windows are sash windows without glazing bars, each with a painted brick flat arch. There is an attic dormer with a shallow-pitched roof. The ground floor has a 20th-century shopfront with a painted rendered surround and a continuous range of glazed sliding doors. A change in brickwork colour below the cornice gutter indicates that the eaves have been raised at some point. A chimney is situated in front of the ridge to the right. The interior includes an early 19th-century staircase with cast-iron balusters. The house was built after Thomas Beckwith, a painter, purchased the land in 1768.
