Description

Monkgate House is a house, now used as offices, built shortly after 1723. It was altered in 1827 and around 1835, with modifications in 1827 for George Hudson. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with painted stone and stucco dressings, and has a pantiled roof. The exterior is three storeys plus an attic, with four bays. The facade features a stone plinth, a painted stone first-floor sill band, and a brick band below. It also has a timber cornice gutter. The windows are glazing bar sashes with rubbed brick flat arches. The attic dormer has a pitched roof and a six-pane sash. A doorway of early 19th-century date occupies the two right-hand bays, with a painted stone or stucco surround incorporating Tuscan pilasters and a cornice. The door has an architrave and flanking lights, is panelled with six panels, and has an overlight. A ridge chimney is located on the left. The interior contains an open well staircase with a cast-iron balustrade of geometric panels and a serpentine handrail. A plaque commemorates that George Hudson MP (1800-1871) lived here.
