Description
No. 48 Monkgate is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It was built around 1770 and underwent alterations in the early and late 19th century. The building was likely raised by one storey in the 20th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with a roof that is concealed by a parapet.
The exterior features three storeys and two bays. The upper-storey windows are sashed, with brick flat arches on the first floor and brick soldier courses on the second floor. The ground floor has a late 19th-century timber shopfront, which includes pilasters, fluted brackets, a fascia, and a cornice. To the right of the shopfront is an early 19th-century pilaster doorcase that contains a four-panel door and a plain overlight.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted that this house was built as part of a symmetrical pair with No. 46. Both properties were purchased by Thomas Beckwith, a painter, in 1768 and constructed shortly thereafter. No. 48 is included for its group value as an important part of the streetscape on Monkgate.
