Description

Heworth Croft and the attached coach house, part of the College of Ripon and York St John, is a house dating from around 1842, with alterations and extensions made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of white brick with some stone dressings and features a slate roof in an Italianate style.

The exterior is symmetrical, consisting of two storeys and three bays. It has brick corner pilasters with stone caps and bases, a slightly projecting central bay, a moulded stone storey band, and projecting timber modillioned eaves. The windows are glazing bar sashes topped with rubbed brick flat arches, and the first-floor windows have stone panels below their sills.

A single-storey porch features corner pilasters and brackets beneath a painted stone or stucco cornice. The outer doorway has a round arch with moulded imposts, while the inner doorway has a round head with a fanlight and a door with three round-headed glazed panels. There are two chimneys near the centre of the ridge, and the eaves project at the gables to create modillioned timber pediments.

To the right (east), there are mid-20th century additions. At the rear left, the main block connects to a northwest wing via a low tower topped with a pyramidal roof. Adjoining to the west is a two-storey former coach house, which features a 20th-century garage door on the ground floor, a wide casement window on the first floor, and a bull's-eye window within the modillioned gable pediment. The interior has not been inspected.
