Description

Sonny's on the Square is a public house that was originally built as two houses around 1840. It features an ashlar façade over a brick structure and has a Welsh slate roof. The building stands four storeys high and has a six-window range, which originally consisted of two dwellings, each containing a single room with three windows on the upper floors.

The ground floor showcases a late 19th-century pub front, characterized by three wide segmentally arched windows with stained and etched glass, flanked by round arched doors that have stained glass fanlights above. The ground floor is rusticated and has a cornice above it. The first floor features 12-pane sash windows, some of which have been renewed in their original openings, and these are topped with entablatures. There is a sill band on the second storey and a cornice below the attic storey. The building has brick axial stacks and is part of the original development associated with Hamilton Square, which was planned by James Gillespie Graham.
