Description
Thingwall Hall is a house, now a residential school, built around 1840, with the first two bays likely added later. It was designed by H.L. Elmes and features a stucco exterior with a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has eight bays, with the first, second, fifth, sixth, and seventh bays projecting. There is a sill band and a top cornice with a blocking course on the first floor, and a ground floor entablature on all but the first two bays. The windows have architraves, except for those in the first two bays; the ground floor windows have sashes with single glazing bars, while the fourth and fifth bays feature later canted bay windows. The first floor windows have casements.
The round-headed entrance includes a complete fanlight and paired half-glazed doors, with a Doric porch that has an Ionic entablature and paired fluted columns. There are four chimney stacks. The right return has three bays, with the central bay projecting forward and featuring two-storey canted bay windows. The ground floor has windows with flat pilasters, and the central bay window is flanked by attached Doric columns. The first floor bay window has consoled sills and apron panels. There are extensions at the rear from 1901, which are of no special interest. Inside, there is a staircase with square balusters and decorative work between.
