Description
The Church of St. John Evangelist is a church built between 1835 and 1837, with the chancel and south chapel added in 1890 by architects Aldridge and Deacon. It is constructed of stone and has a slate roof. The west tower features octagonal turrets and pinnacles, a Tudor arched entrance with doors that have pointed panels, a 2-light west window, a three-faced clock, and 2-light bell openings. The tower is topped with an embattled parapet and a needle spire.
The church has flanking gabled bays with diagonal buttresses and 3-light windows that display Perpendicular tracery. The aisles contain 3-light windows set between shallow buttresses, although the pinnacles are missing. There is a gabled organ loft with a 3-light window and a vestry located to the north of the chancel. The east window of the chancel is 5-light, while the south chapel window is 4-light.
Inside, the church features Perpendicular arcades and a coffered ceiling. There is a west gallery that spans the nave and aisles, along with wooden screens leading to the chapel and chancel. The chancel roof is supported by arch-braced tie beams on angle corbels, and the north angle includes a central window designed by Morris and Co.
