Description

25 and 27 Tontine Road is a pair of cottages, originally built as one-up-one-down homes, now functioning as a single dwelling. The cottages are dated 1788, as indicated by the inscription on the lintel of the doorway to the left, although they have been altered over time. They are constructed from coursed squared sandstone and feature a felted stone slate roof, with a 20th-century metal pipe chimney. The building has a single-depth, two-unit plan and stands two low storeys high, with one window on the left and one on the right. The left end has a doorway (now leading to a through-lobby) with a rectangular lintel inscribed: M/R M/1788, while the right end has a doorway with a thin rectangular lintel. There are two square windows on each floor, equipped with flush sills and altered glazing. This building forms part of a group with Nos 15 and 17, Nos 19-23 adjoining to the left, and Nos 29 and 31 adjoining to the right.
