Description

The Up Holland Tunnel, east portal, is a portal of a railway tunnel built between 1846 and 1848 for the Liverpool and Bury Railway Company. The engineers responsible for its design were James and William Thomson. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar and features a horseshoe arch with a deep splayed reveal and a roll-moulded surround. The retaining wall is constructed of rock-faced masonry, and there is a short parapet made of large dressed blocks. This portal forms a group with a railway bridge located approximately 250 meters to the east.
