Description

No. 9 Towngate is a house, or possibly two houses, likely built in the early 18th century, which is now used as an office. The building is constructed of brick, rendered and painted white, with a slate roof. It has two bays and a double pile plan, rising three storeys high with bands on two levels. The doors, located on the right side of each bay, feature stone architraves painted black, with modern shop windows beside them. The first floor has tall windows, while the second floor has square windows, all equipped with stone sills.

Inside, there are timber-framed partition walls and ovolo moulded beams on the ground floor, with those in the second bay set on edge. The staircase has a narrow string, slim turned balusters, column newels, and a moulded handrail, which is exposed at the top level but boxed-in below. Some internal renovation or alteration was in progress on the first floor at the time of the survey.
