Description
No. 78 Towngate is a building that likely dates from the mid-19th century. Originally a constabulary station, it has also served as a library and is now a club. The structure is made of red brick laid in Flemish bond, featuring a low stone plinth and ashlar dressings, topped with a hipped slate roof. The building has an L-shaped plan and consists of four bays across two storeys.
The outer corners are accentuated with rusticated quoins, while the two central bays, which project slightly, have flush quoins. These central bays are connected at the ground floor by a Tuscan pilastrade that bears the inscription "CONSTABULARY STATION." The left side features panelled double doors, and the right side has a window with a panelled stone apron. Recessed iron footscrapers are located on either side of the door. All windows are sashed and include glazing bars. The right return wall has similar windows and two doors. Inside, there is a contemporary lock-up.
