Description

The Old Grammar School and attached cottage, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with the cottage dated 1790, is now a museum located at the corner of the churchyard. The building is constructed of brick with a stone plinth and quoins, topped with a slate roof. It features a gable chimney at the left end and a very large external chimney stack at the right end, which has scored rendering. The school building is rectangular, consisting of four bays and two storeys, while the attached cottage at the southeast corner is one bay and two storeys. The west wall of the school is slightly stepped and includes some quoins in the centre. There are five ground floor windows, each with three lights, featuring rendered brick mullions and segmental brick heads. The first floor has three windows with five, four, and four lights, all with rendered brick mullions, and similar windows can be found on the rear wall. The current entrance is through the cottage door at the south end, which has a lintel inscribed "By the liberal Contributions of the Gentlemen of this Parish and others in the year 1790." Inside, the floor level has been recently lowered by excavation, and the ground floor room contains five chamfered beams, two of which have arch-bracing to wooden corbels, along with significant evidence of internal timber framing.
