Description

This is a barn and byre, dating to the 17th century, with significant rebuilding and recladding in the 18th century, likely around 1753, as indicated by a date stone. Originally timber-framed, the barn is now clad in finely coursed rubble with a stone slab roof, incorporating some corrugated asbestos. The roadside elevation features two large wagon entrances with planked double doors, alongside three smaller doorways, one of which is blocked. A first-floor three-light mullioned window is located to the right; one mullion has been removed. Remnants of an apex pinnacle remain. External steps lead to the end wall, bearing a date stone inscribed "HBM 1753" within a shaped surround. Later stone and brick outshots have been added to the rear. The interior retains large, full cruck timbers pegged into posts with spurs and yoke. Some surviving timber framing remains, though much was removed during the stone wall construction. A right-hand section has a queen strut roof with trenched purlins, a ridge piece, and wind braces, possibly dating to the 18th century. Originally framed, some timber members below tie level are visible in the rear wall of this section.
