Description

Barn. Probably 17th century, with extensions and a re-roofed section likely dating to the 18th century. This timber-framed barn has a red clay plain-tile half-hipped roof.

The barn follows a 5-bay plan, featuring two later doorways positioned symmetrically in bays 2 and 4, and another in the southwest end facing the road. The two southwest bays are a later addition, likely dating to the early 18th century, coinciding with the barn's re-roofing and the construction of the nearby Bower (listed separately).

The exterior walls are entirely weatherboarded. Two diagonally-boarded doors are symmetrically placed on either side, and a third is located in the centre of the southwest end; all are topped with inclined boards creating small hoods. On the northwest side, centrally located between the two doorways beneath the eaves, is a round convex clock face with gilded hands and Roman numerals.

Inside, the clock's movement is enclosed, but the large weight hangs from a tie-beam. The timber-framed structure remains largely intact. The original three bays at the northeast end feature close-studded walls and curved tension braces above the mid-rail. The massive wall-posts have slight jowling, and arched braces support the tie-beams. Above is a likely 18th-century queen-post roof structure with clasped side-purlins, intact common rafters, and a ridge-board. This roof extends over the two bays at the southwest end, which have lighter scantling walls. At the junction of the original and later sections, between bays 3 and 4, two pairs of wall-posts sit side by side, supported by two tie-beams and braces.
