Description
The Mellor War Memorial is a structure commemorating the First World War, Second World War, and Korean War, with the designer unknown. It is made of white granite.
The memorial features a cross set on a tall octagonal shaft that has a decorative capital and finial, all standing on a square base with four steps. It is located in a fenced, triangular garden on the east side of a small memorial park. The stone memorial is elevated on a wide, square plinth consisting of four steps. The tall, tapering octagonal shaft is mounted on a square, panelled base and rises to a decorative octagonal capital adorned with delicate, stylised relief carving. Atop the capital is a similarly decorated octagonal finial that supports the cross.
The four panels of the square base display inscriptions in applied lead lettering. The front, east panel bears the dedication for 1914-1918: "THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED / IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF MELLOR / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR FREEDOM / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The north and south side panels list the names of the men who died in the First World War, while the rear, west panel includes the names of those who died in the Second World War, along with the name of the soldier who died in the Korean War.
