Description

The Audley War Memorial is a First World War memorial created by Messrs W & J Mellor and dedicated in 1923, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite and has an octagonal plan.

The memorial faces north-east and consists of a plain obelisk on an octagonal base with four steps. The base supports a square plinth, which is inscribed on its north-east face with '1939 - 1945' and lists the names of 28 men who died during the Second World War. Above the plinth is a tall pedestal that tapers from a chamfered base to a simple cornice, inscribed on its north-east face with ‘1914 THE GREAT WAR 1918’. The north-east, north-west, and south-west faces of the pedestal bear the names of 121 men from the parish who died in the First World War. Rising from the pedestal is a tall shaft that tapers in square section to a moulded capstone topped with a palmette finial. The shaft features a sheathed sword of peace and a laurel wreath of victory on its north-east face, with the inscription: TO / OUR / GLORIOUS / DEAD.

The late 20th-century metal railings and stone rubble walling that create the oval-shaped enclosure around the memorial are not considered of special architectural or historic interest and are excluded from the listing.
