Description
The Gamlingay War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled and dedicated in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Cornish granite and has an octagonal shape.
The memorial is located in the sensory garden at St Mary's Field Cemetery, which opened in 2016. It features a two-stepped octagonal base, with the bottom step made of concrete, topped by an octagonal plinth. A tall shaft rises from the plinth, tapering in octagonal form to a Latin cross with knops at the ends. The top of the shaft is decorated with small, blind, trefoil-headed lancets set between bands of carved oak leaves.
On the northwest face of the plinth, there is a dedicatory inscription for the First World War that reads: "THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1919. / TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AS A TESTIMONY OF / EFFORT NOBLY / WROUGHT / AND IN MEMORY OF / OUR FALLEN." Below this is a quotation from Homer's Iliad: "HE SERVES ME MOST WHO / SERVES HIS COUNTRY BEST." The names of 65 men who died in the First World War are inscribed on the other five faces of the plinth. Additionally, the base of the plinth is inscribed with '1939 - 1945', which includes the names of 14 men who died during the Second World War on the remaining five faces of the base.
