Description

The Alcester War Memorial is a First World War memorial constructed in 1921. It was subsequently altered after the Second World War (after 1945) and the Korean War (after 1953). The memorial is built from stone and takes the form of a tall cross standing on a four-stepped, octagonal base. The base rises to a plinth bearing brass plaques with the names of those who fell, along with a central plaque inscribed: "PASS NOT / THIS STONE / IN SORROW / BUT IN PRIDE / AND MAY / YOU LIVE / AS NOBLY / AS THEY DIED.” The base tapers upwards to form the column’s shaft, around which is inscribed: "TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / AND IN HONOUR / OF THE FALLEN.” The column itself features four small gables at its base, a tapering shaft, and a capital topped by a Celtic-style cross.
