Description
This is a timber-framed house, originally dating to the 17th century, although mistakenly marked with the date 1525 above the passage door. It is now used as shops and flats, situated on the east side of Alcester High Street. The building has a U-plan shape and stands two storeys tall with an attic, featuring twin gables and a two-window front. The ground floor has been built under, incorporating 20th-century doors and shop fronts, with a 20th-century door leading to a central passage. The windows are 20th-century casements. The gables are ornamented with moulded, scrolled bargeboards of two differing designs. The rear of the building has two timber-framed gabled wings, one of which has late 20th-century boarding on its gable. A large stack, constructed of lias and brick, is positioned between the wing and front range, featuring three truncated square brick shafts with V-shaped pilaster strips. There are 19th and 20th-century additions to the building. Inside the right-hand shop, there is an open fireplace, a bressumer, stepped stop-chamfered ceiling beams containing a carved acanthus scroll bracket, and exposed timber framing. An old six-panelled door is found on the first floor.
