Description

Bottoms Bridge is a road bridge built around 1790, designed by engineer William Strutt Junior for Samuel Oldknow. It is constructed from ashlar and dressed stone and features one large semi-circular span, with square projections and retaining walls that curve outward, ending in square piers. The ashlar parapet walls have a rounded top. To the left, there is an arched opening that provided access from Mellor Lodge through an underground tunnel to Oldknow's stables. This bridge is an important and impressive example of late 18th-century engineering.
