Description

The walling at the old lime kiln, located behind number 32 on Strines Road in Marple, dates from 1797 and was built for Samuel Oldknow. It is constructed from dressed sandstone and features a total of four concaved bays that serve as a retaining wall, providing access to the kilns that are tunnelled into the hillside. The first two bays have semi-circular headed openings, which are now blocked, that previously contained two tiers of Gothic lights. The third bay has a blocked semi-elliptical headed opening. The lower arches in each bay are now obscured due to the raised ground level.
