Description

The toll house opposite Top Lock, now a house, dates from the early 19th century and features a 2-bay addition from the later 19th century. It is built of dressed stone and has a slate roof. Originally, it was a 2-storey structure with one bay, providing access to the toll office at the first floor level. The building was extended at the rear by 2 bays. Steps lead up to the office door, which is sheltered by a later timber porch. To the right of the door, there is a blocked window with a stone sill and wedge lintel, next to a board where current toll prices were displayed. On the left side, there is a door obscured by a 20th-century porch and an 8-pane sash window on each floor, both featuring wedge lintels and stone sills. The later addition includes two sash windows on each floor, with stone heads and sills. The building has bracketed eaves gutters, a hipped roof, and three chimney stacks.
