Description

This is a toll house, likely dating to around 1800. It is constructed of hammer-dressed watershot stone, with a roof of graduated stone slates. The building comprises one by two bays, and has a 20th-century lean-to extension against the left-hand gable. The front elevation features a four-light window on each floor, with recessed flat-faced stone mullions. A 20th-century single-light window has been inserted on the ground floor. Two two-light windows are visible in the gable end, alongside a blind recess at attic level, which likely served to display current toll rates. A small three-light window is located at the rear. A gable chimney stack rises from the roof. The toll house served a branch of the Oldham/Standedge turnpike road.
