Description

Lime Kiln Farm is a limestone dispatch building, constructed around 1797 for Samuel Oldknow. Originally used to load burnt lime from lime kilns onto mule-drawn wagons, it is now a house. The building is constructed of dressed stone with a slate roof. It has five bays across the front and two bays deep, with a single-story front and two stories at the rear, plus an attic. A lean-to is attached to the left gable, and a 20th-century extension to the right. Doorways with rusticated surrounds are found in bay 4 (now blocked) and bay 1. Windows have square-cut surrounds. Bays 2, 3, and 4 are slightly advanced, with gabled dormer windows over bays 2 and 4. Three ridge chimney stacks are present. Six semi-circular arched cart entries, now glazed, are at the rear at a lower level. A stone first-floor band runs across the front, with five windows featuring square-cut surrounds.
