Description

This is a pair of early 19th century houses, originally built as a canal company manager's house and a boat builder's or apprentice's house. They are constructed of dressed stone with a 20th-century tile roof. Number 7 has a double-depth central staircase plan, two storeys plus an attic, and a lean-to against the right-hand gable. Its three-bay front has a central door with a semi-circular radial fanlight above. There are two ground-floor and three first-floor windows, all with square-cut surrounds, 16-pane sashes, and a first-floor sill band. The rear of Number 7 is similar, but the flat-headed doorway has been blocked. It features two ridge chimney stacks and a semi-circular headed attic light. Number 5 has its entrance on the opposite side, with two ground-floor window openings (one formerly a door) and three first-floor windows, one of which is blind. It also has a continuous sill band, rock-faced jamb stones, square stone eaves brackets, and a gable stack. Brick offices are attached to the rear, and a reduced-size workshop, originally a boat shed/workshop, is located to the right.
