Description

Posset Bridge, also known as Number 18 on the Peak Forest Canal, was built in 1804 by engineers Benjamin Outram and Thomas Brown. The bridge is constructed from rock-faced and dressed sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings. It has three openings: one for the canal, one for a now-blocked branch leading to the lime kilns, and a horse tunnel. Additionally, there is a boatman's passage that provides access from the pound level to the upper level. The two canal arches are skew, semi-circular, and include keystones, with a battered pier separating them. A stone band is largely obscured by a 20th-century footbridge. The parapets, some of which are missing, are made of ashlar blocks with rounded tops. The horse tunnel features a compressed horseshoe arch with a keystone, a stone band, and square piers on either side.
