Description
Marple War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1922, with the architect remaining unknown. It features a stone statue of an allegorical female figure holding a cross to her breast, which stands atop a crenellated square plinth made of polished granite. This plinth is positioned on a stepped base.
On the south-east face of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "WAR / MEMORIAL / PARK / THIS LAND WAS GIVEN / BY THE CARVER & BARLOW / FAMILIES OF THIS PARISH / IN MEMORY OF THE MEN / OF MARPLE WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / AND THE LAYING OUT / WAS DONE BY PUBLIC / SUBSCRIPTION." Other sides of the memorial list the names of those who fell.
The memorial is accompanied by two granite slabs that display the names of the fallen from the Second World War and later conflicts, secured in place by iron fixings. Both the memorial and the slabs are situated on a low stone platform, which is partially enclosed by iron railings. The south-east face of the platform features two plaques, each inscribed with the dates of the First and Second World Wars.
