Description

Styal War Memorial is a square, tapering obelisk set on a high, square pedestal, which is raised on a square plinth. The memorial stands on a modern semi-circular platform constructed in 2002. The high pedestal features a square-cut step and has a slightly projecting plain base and cornice, with a central frieze band. The east face of the frieze is relief-carved with a wreath, two flags, and crossed swords.

On top of the pedestal is the square, tapering obelisk, which has a slightly projecting square base with inscribed framing lines on each face. The lower corners of the obelisk are decorated with relief anthemion motifs, and there is a fluted band near the top. The front face displays a relief carving of a laurel wreath beneath the fluted band, inscribed with the dedication: "TO THE MEN / OF STYAL / WHO LAID / DOWN THEIR / LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR." The dates "1914 / 1919" are located between the corner anthemia, with the additional dates "1939 / 1945" added above the dedication.

The left side face of the obelisk lists the ranks and names of thirteen men who died in the First World War, with the ranks and names of two men who died in the Second World War inscribed above, along with the dates "1939-45." The right side face honors a further twelve men who died in the First World War. A small metal plaque is attached to the rear face, recording the relocation of the war memorial in July 2002.
