Description
The Denton War Memorial, located in Victoria Park near a 19th-century bandstand (Grade II), commemorates the First World War and includes additions for subsequent conflicts after 1945. Designed by James J Hirst and Arnold Radcliffe and erected in 1921, it is constructed from white granite.
The memorial consists of a rectangular, tapering obelisk set upon a deep, cruciform pedestal, which itself is raised on a flight of four cruciform steps standing on a shallow, rectangular base. The tall obelisk is made of large stone blocks with stepped blocks towards the top, culminating in a diamond-shaped cap and a deep chamfered plinth at the base. The front elevation features a projecting rectangular panel topped by a tapering, engaged column that rises part-way up the obelisk. This panel is inscribed with a dedication to those who died in the Great War (1914-1918), acknowledging the memorial’s erection by the townsmen in July 1921. A similar engaged column is on the rear elevation, set on a double-stepped plinth.
The front central face of the cruciform pedestal displays a panel listing the names of the fallen in alphabetical order. The recessed outer faces each have a square panel relief-carved with a wreath, encompassing the dates 1914 and 1918 respectively. A small rectangular granite tablet set against the plinth bears an inscription honouring the memory of those from the town who died at the call of their country in the years since 1945. The side elevations of the pedestal also contain panels of inscribed names, as does the rear elevation.
