Description
Christ Church is a church built between 1848 and 1853 by G.G. Scott for the Church Commissioners. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a slate roof. The building consists of a nave and aisles, both under pitched roofs, and lacks a clerestory. There is a north-west tower and a chancel, all designed in the Gothic revival style.
The exterior is plain, with four bays in the aisles that have a projecting plinth and weathered buttresses located only at the corners. Each bay contains a 2-light window with plate tracery, while the three bays of the nave have similar windows but with hoodmoulds and carved stops. The east window has four lights, and the west window has three lights, both featuring geometrical tracery. The gables are coped and topped with finials.
The three-stage tower includes bold angled buttresses, an arched door beneath a gable, lancet openings on the second stage, paired lancet belfry openings with clock faces above, and a broach spire with lucarnes.
Inside, the nave arcade is double-chamfered, with alternating circular and octagonal columns that have moulded capitals and bases. The arch-braced roof trusses spring from carved corbels, and the chancel features a waggon roof. Notable interior elements include an alabaster font and pulpit, stained glass, and timber fittings. In the 20th century, the two west bays and the north aisle were partitioned off.
