Description
Nos 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 Shaws Fold are former farmhouse and farm buildings that were later converted into seven mill workers' cottages. The buildings date from the 17th century, with an addition at the east end dated 1721 and late 18th century alterations to the cottages. They are largely timber framed on a stone plinth, with additions at either end and a raised roof made of washed brick. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and Kerridge stone-slate, and there are four brick chimneys. The structure has a long rectangular plan and features a 1½ and 2-storey, 15-bay north front. The left four bays, constructed in brick, have a door at either end and three-light casements, all under cambered brick heads. The remaining bays are in small timber framing with some angle bracing, but the central six bays have a raised roof in brick. These include 20th-century three-light casements and board doors. The five bays on the right are the former farmhouse, which has casements and two board doors, along with two gabled dormers above. The east gable features a date plaque reading HTJ 1721. The interior has not been inspected.
