Description

Walton's Butchers Shop and the attached house date from the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of brindled brick in Flemish bond and has a Welsh slate roof. The house features two storeys and two bays, positioned to the right of a small single-storey shop with a rear wing. The house has a central six-panelled door set in a pegged frame, topped with an overlight and framed by a brick arch. It includes four-pane sash windows with projecting stone sills and brick flat arches. The eaves and verges overhang, and there are round-ended bargeboards along with end stacks that have projecting bands and caps.

The shop has a wooden front with part-glazed double doors and a vented overlight on the left side. To the right, there is a raised panel and a large six-pane sash window with a fixed upper frame. A wooden cornice with acanthus consoles sits above a blind box that features a fascia painted with 'Est. 1856 H.M. WALTON BUTCHER'. The roof of the shop also oversails. On the left side, the rear wing has a segmentally-arched doorway and a round-arched window. At the back, there is a detached slaughterhouse, which has an open-fronted bay on the left and a Welsh slate roof with a louvred ridge. Walton's Butchers is said to have been established at a nearby farm before moving to these premises.
