Description
Birch Farm Cottage and The Worralls are two houses, originally a farmhouse and cottage. The Worralls dates largely to the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed with a mix of timber framing on a brick plinth and brick, with a Kerridge stone-slate roof, a stone ridge, and two brick chimneys. The south front has 1½ storeys and five bays. The right-hand bays are original and feature 4-light mullioned wooden windows from the mid-19th century, each with a flat hood; the upper windows are within added gabled dormers. A rebated 3-centred arched doorcase with a 20th-century door is also visible. The left side has a similar gabled dormer over a brick section. The right gable displays regular timber framing with a tiebeam and collar truss, and contains an original 3-light wood mullioned window in the gable.
Birch Farm Cottage is early 19th century, with 20th-century alterations. It’s built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a Welsh slate roof. The 2-storey, 3-bay front has rusticated stone quoins. Mullioned and transomed windows from the 20th century are set within flat, gauged and rubbed brick heads, with stone keyblocks and stone sills; the upper windows are also mullioned. A door on the left has a similar head, with a fanlight containing three semi-circular headed glazed panels.
