Description
Farm Fold Cottages, located on Altrincham Road in Styal, were originally a farmhouse and are now two cottages. They date back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The cottages are timber-framed with washed brick infill and feature a thatched roof along with two brick chimneys. The structure has a two-bay gable entry and is cruck-framed, standing at one and a half stories with a three-bay front facing north. The walls display four tall posts, although some of the original framing has been lost. There are four wooden casements with four lights each, and the upper two are located in added timber-framed gabled dormers. A door on the right leads to No. 14. The east gable shows remnants of a cruck truss that has been truncated by a later chimney, and the original doorway now has a 20th-century door. The west gable features only a pair of crucks. There is a small brick extension at the rear. Inside No. 13, there is a central full cruck truss with a tiebeam and collar, along with wind-braced purlins. It likely has an inserted floor with chamfered ceiling beams supported by posts.
