Description
Farm Fold Cottages, located on the south side of Altrincham Road in Styal, were originally a hay barn that was later converted into six mill workers' cottages and are now three houses. The building dates from the 18th century, with late 18th-century alterations made for Samuel Greg and 20th-century restoration work. It is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond and has a Welsh slate roof with two brick chimneys. The structure has a rectangular plan, featuring a two-storey, eight-bay south front. The south elevation includes four restored two-light small pane iron casement windows with cambered brick heads and four half-glazed doors below, with flat heads above four similar windows. Remnants of the original hay barn can still be seen, including the piers and a Gothick arch in the west gable. Each gable has a door and windows for the cottages at the rear. This building is a significant example of the early development phase when Samuel Greg converted existing farm buildings into cottages for mill workers.
