Description
Farm Fold Cottages is a former farmhouse that was later converted into three mill workers' cottages and is now a single house. It dates from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations from the early 17th century, extensions at both ends from the late 18th century, and some 20th-century modifications. The building is constructed of washed brick and features a thatched roof with one brick chimney. It has an L-shaped plan that evolved from a gable-entry house and is 1½ stories high with an 8-bay south front. The left end bay projects forward under a gable and has a 20th-century two-light wooden casement window with glazing bars. There are five similar windows along the rest of the front and two framed and boarded doors. Above these, there are two smaller two-light casements that are also covered by the thatch.
Inside, the core of the house contains two pairs of full crucks with poor scantling, one featuring a collar and the other having both a collar and a king post. The original door has a four-centred head and opens against a heck post and screen, which has now been opened out. The interior also includes heavy firebeams, and the inserted floor has a chamfered ceiling beam with fillet and tongue stops on the inserted posts, along with wide joists, some of which are chamfered. The extensions at either end incorporate re-used timberwork in the roofs and ceilings.
