Description

The Bildeston War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure, erected in 1920, made of Portland stone on a stone base.

The memorial features an obelisk that rises from a square plinth set on a stepped base. At the top of the obelisk, there is carved swagged decoration above a ball, with additional decorative carving around the base. Two sides of the plinth display the names of fourteen individuals who died in the First World War, while a third side bears the inscription, "In grateful memory of the men of Bildeston who gave their lives for their country 1914-1918." The fourth side includes the inscription, "Also the war 1939-1945," followed by five names.

The memorial was unveiled by Mr. A E Hoare in 1920 and originally listed fifteen names, with five more added after the Second World War.

The Bildeston War Memorial is significant as it commemorates the impact of the two major wars of the 20th century on both the nation and the local community. Its elegant design, enhanced by decorative details, contributes to its aesthetic value, and it holds group value with the surrounding listed buildings in the Market Place.
