Description
The Bredgar War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure made of Portland stone, erected in 1920 to honor those who fell in World War I, with additional names commemorating the fallen of World War II.
The memorial features a wheel-head (or Celtic) cross atop a tall chamfered shaft, which stands on a three-tier square plinth above a two-step square base. The top tier of the plinth has an inscription in flush lead lettering on its east face that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF / THE MEN FROM THIS / PARISH WHO LAID / DOWN THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918." The names of the World I fallen and their regiments are inscribed on the four faces of the lower part of the plinth. The south face includes the inscription '1939-1945' along with the names of two individuals who fell in World War II, with another name inscribed on the chamfer of the top step of the base.
The memorial was unveiled on December 1, 1920. It is recognized for its significance as a poignant reminder of the effects of war on the local community, its careful detailing and carving despite its standard design, and its prominent location within the conservation area.
