Description

The Fen Ditton War Memorial, constructed of Portland stone by Ivett and Reed Ltd, was unveiled in 1921. The monument is square in plan, featuring a tapered obelisk set upon a plinth, which itself stands on a stepped base defined by four Portland stone posts connected by a metal chain. Inscriptions are painted on all four sides of the plinth; the east elevation reads "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918". The north and south elevations list twenty-two names of those who died in the First World War (1914-18), arranged alphabetically by rank. Five further names of those who died in the Second World War (1939-45) were subsequently added to the base of the north elevation. The west elevation bears the inscription "LEST WE FORGET". The overall height of the memorial is approximately 4.5 metres, and it is situated on an irregularly-shaped grass island at the junction of High Street and Church Street.
