Description
The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly used as a rectory. It dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, with rebuilding in the early 18th century and additions made in the late 19th century. The structure features a timber frame, 18th-century red brick, and 19th-century gault brick that has been painted. The roofs are covered with plain tiles.
The central range of the building has two storeys and attics, while the north cross wing has two storeys and a kitchen wing that is one and two storeys high. The south wing also has two storeys. The south-east elevation consists of a main range with five 'bays' and end stacks, five hipped dormer windows with casements, a deep wooden cornice with modillions, and a brick band between the floors.
On the first floor, there are five casement windows with original wooden mullioned and transomed frames. The ground floor features four twelve-pane hung sash windows, two of which on the right have 18th-century glazing bars. The central door has six fielded panels and a patterned oval fanlight, topped with a modern pediment supported by console brackets.
Inside the main range, early 18th-century details include two staircases, bolection moulded panelling, and door architraves. The south wing retains exposed timber framing from the original jettied building. It is believed that the original structure was possibly refronted and the main range widened during the time of Dr. Davis, who was Master of Queen's College and rector from 1711 to 1732.
