Description

The Stewkley War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure made of Cornish granite. It features a tapering obelisk with a pyramidal top, standing approximately 3.6 meters high. The obelisk is mounted on a square plinth with sloping shoulders, which rests on a two-stepped base.

Inscriptions and names are carved into the faces of the plinth, with all lettering in inset, black-painted lead. The dedication on the north face of the plinth reads: "TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ THIS OBELISK IS/ ERECTED/ IN HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THE/ STEWKLEY MEN/ WHO FELL IN DEFENCE OF/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY./ 1914 - 1918." The names of 30 individuals who fell in the First World War are listed on the other three sides of the plinth, with ten names per side, organized alphabetically by surname and identified by rank and initials.

On the lower part of the north side of the obelisk, the names of six individuals who fell in the Second World War are inscribed, with "1939 - 1945" above. These names are also arranged alphabetically, along with their rank and initials.

The memorial is situated within a small enclosure of granite paving, bordered by a low granite sett.
