Description

The canal milestone, located immediately south of bridge number 161 on the Trent and Mersey Canal, dates from 1819 and is made of cast iron. It features a tapered circular stem inscribed with "R & D STONE 1819." The curved plates display the distances to Shardlow, which is 72 miles away, and Preston Brook, which is 20 miles away. All lettering is presented in Roman capitals, and the milestone is topped with a domed cap.
