Description
Lock Number 68 on the Trent and Mersey Canal, built in 1777 by engineer James Brindley, features walls made of brick and stone. The lock has a single upper gate that has been replaced with steel, while the double lower gates are made of timber. The copings have been partly replaced with concrete, and the steps have also been replaced in concrete. The attached accommodation bridge is constructed of painted brickwork and has a deep segmental arch. Its abutments have a concave batter and are curved in plan, with square end-piers and flush stone copings.
