Description
This canal milepost, located south of Bridge No. 164 on the Trent and Mersey Canal, is dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets that indicate distances: "Shardlow 73 miles" and "Preston Brook 19 miles." The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
