Description

This canal milepost, located north of Bridge Number 192, is dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets, indicating distances: "Shardlow 83 miles" and "Preston Brook 9 miles." The Trent and Mersey Canal, which this milepost references, was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
