Description

The canal milepost, dated "R & D Stone 1819," is located on the south side of the Trent and Mersey Canal. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets that read: "Shardlow 44 miles" and "Preston Brook 48 miles." This milepost was likely cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal itself was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
