Description

The canal milepost located on the north side of the Trent and Mersey Canal is dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets that indicate the distances: "Shardlow 79 miles" and "Preston Brook 13 miles." The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
